Alterna Energy Inc. continues to operate its South African Division and remains active in the carbon industry. Alterna Energy is a new federally registered Canadian energy company with offices in Prince George, British Columbia and Johannesburg, South Africa. Alterna is working to become a world leader in bio-based carbon technologies and provide a sustainable energy source.
South African operations are based on biomass feed stocks which are smaller than those in Canada and other North Hemisphere countries. Virtually all of South Africa's electricity is based on fossil coal. This presents niche opportunities for Alterna Energy for two reasons;
- Electricity demand has outgrown current power supplies,
- Coal-based power generates greenhouse gases and emissions of CO2, SOx, NOx.
Alterna Energy's first project in Mpumalanga Province is small and will only reduce coal-based electricity consumption by 2000 MWh each year. The project involves Alterna Energy taking agricultural waste biomass from a food processing plant nearby and converting the waste into heat and carbon. The heat will be used in the food processing plant's drying chambers thereby reducing electrical consumption, costs and greenhouse gas emissions which are related to coal-based electricity. About 2000 tons of carbon will be produced annually and sold to Alterna customers.
